A fellow UCR student once said, “I feel that I have to separate my Queer identity with my Latinx/Xicanx identity.” Why is this so? Well, many Latinx/Xicanx who are queer (an umbrella term to describe lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender) feel they mustn’t reveal their identity because of the stigma attached to being gay, lesbian, bisexual, or transgender within the Latinx/Xicanx community.
La Familia (LaFa) is widely known as a cultural, social, political, and advocacy group for and by Latinx/Xicanx and inclusive to all. There is a La Familia chapter in all the UCs, except UCR. The purpose of La Familia de UCR (LaFa) will be to bridge the LGBT and the Latinx/Xicanx communities on campus.
